RE: Yes,...... another dreaded Tire Question....!

are you talking sidewall of the tire? I am confused It is the numbers following the tire size on the sidewall of the tire. It is what distinguishes the weight carrying capacity between 2 tire of the same size.

RE: Yes,...... another dreaded Tire Question....!

Option 4. GY Wrangler Pro-Grade LT265/70-17E Rated 3195# That is the same as all Load Index tires at 3195# for this size. It is the highest capacity in this size for an E rated tire.

RE: Building Camper from Scratch...Was it Worth it?

My father (bless his soul, he will be 92 next month!) build a Glen-L travel trailer in the mid 70's as a retirement project. He did it for the fun of it! he always wanted a TT and being a true jack- of- all trades renaissance man he chose to make one. He welded the chassis, framed, plumbed and wire it. Pre-build cabinets cost too much so he bought a router and did it himself. Mom and sis made the curtains and upholstery. I camped in inside it during the phases of construction. A lot of his satisfaction came not only in the pride of the DIY aspect, but also the look of disbelief from fellow campers when told it homebuilt! Am I touting how proud I am of my father... Absolutely, But as to the OP... building one's own camper is a labor of love... I can attest to that!

RE: Yes,...... another dreaded Tire Question....!

...What is the load index? I'm looking at tires for my 2500HD and have been tossing around the different tires. Not sure what ones to get yet. From the Tire Rack website: The load index is an assigned number ranging from 0 to 279 that corresponds with the load-carrying capacity of a tire. See chart here LOAD INDEX What I have learned this past week that my stock size 265/70/17E is ONLY available with LI of 121 regardless of manufacturer. When looking at specification sheets such as THIS ONE it is the number just after the tire size in the first column.

RE: Yes,...... another dreaded Tire Question....!

Help me out with some backwards math… I may be looking to buy too much tire. When I weighed my T/TC combo when I had the camper the ratio was 46/54 front to rear. I have not weighed the truck axles empty but the weight of the truck with full fuel tank is 7500 lbs. Here’s where I need some check of the arithmetic logic: How can I determine the max weight of a camper I can use with tires having a load index (LI) of 121 which is 3195#? Assume the GVWR to be capable and do not take it into account right now… let’s just focus on the tires. Note to BTGrafix...there was a BO tire for 16" rims available with an LI of 128.

RE: Yes,...... another dreaded Tire Question....!

...I had Big-O XT studded, for winter use, and Big-O AT for summer. I was pretty happy with them, especially after the XT went to a 3415 rating. I just called tech support at Big O... the 3415# is for the 18" wheel with a load index of 123, unfortunately the LI for my size is only 121 which translates to 3195# with only 2 ply sidewall:M

RE: Yes,...... another dreaded Tire Question....!

I think I have found the happy medium here in stock size: Big "O" X/T. Weight Capacity Up to 3,415 lbs. Per Tire I have had Big "O" in the past and I really like them on my car. This would be the first truck tire. Their warranty and road hazard is second to none.

Yes,...... another dreaded Tire Question....!

I took a chunk out of the sideway of 1 tire last time out 4WD'ing. It is a 3 ply sideway and I hogged out though 2 of 'em. Unfortunately, all tire tread is down enough that due to sufficent wear I cannot just replace the one... all 4 need to be replaced. Stock size is LT 265/ 70R17. Looking at 3 options: A.) BFG KO- 3 ply sideway, E rate, 3195# load capacity. LT 265/ 70R17 (stock) B.) Toyo Open Country A/T- 2ply sideway, E rate, 3195# load capacity. LT 265/ 70R17 (stock) C.) Toyo Open Country A/T- 3ply sideway, E rate, 3970# load capacity. LT 285/ 75R17 (1 size larger) I would like the higher wt. rating of the larger tire, but speedo would need to be corrected and I would need to verify the truck (w/o TC) could fit in my garage. It just fits now. The higher wt. rating is in anticipation of my next TC. The 3 ply sideway is a plus for opening reason stated. The BFG has the 3 ply, but lower weight rating (compared the the Toyo 285.) Is the sideway construction what gives a tire it's stiffness (i.e. less sway?) The Toyo's have a supposedly higher "stiffness" for less sway (so I have read??) Is this only on the 285 due to it's extra sideway ply? Would the stock size have the same characteristics in only 2 ply? I like the idea of the 285's, but I would need to buy 5 instead of 4 and would have to verify spare tire location fitment. Would have to rotate 5 and not 4 (need to buy new rim to match.) My "ideal" tire would be: Stock size, 3 ply sidewall, E rate, 3970# load capacity. Is there such a beast? All opinions appreciated. -frank

VeriLite Truck Camper... Any comments, concerns...?

I am going to look at a hardside 1997 VeriLite 8' camper this weekend. From the photos it seems to be in overall decent shape (but pictures can be deceiving.) I have only superficially heard of this TC brand. It has all the requisite features including toilet and shower. Any comments or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks, -frank
